Domestic Violence Awareness Month

I’m sure many of us driving have noticed the purple ribbons tied to light posts in our towns, but many of us don’t know why their there.

At every domestic call officers provide a victims notification booklet which provides phone numbers for services ready to help.  Unfortunately few victims take advantage of these services. Many believe that it was a one-time occurrence while others just don’t want to air their dirty laundry.  Nearly 25% of our domestic violence calls are to repeat addresses.  If you’re a victim of domestic violence there is help available to you through organizations such as Safe Haven of Pike County, a nonprofit victim service agency located in Milford.  The Center for Disease Control estimates that 1 in 5 females and 1 in 9 males will be the victim of domestic violence.

So when you see a purple ribbon, let it be a reminder that there are organizations out there ready to help.  If you are the victim of domestic violence please call your local police or Safe Haven at 570-296-2827.
